Zayn Malik Fader Interview

Zayn Malik insists there are “no secret relationships” between One Direction band members or that he broke up with Perrie Edward “over text message,” despite rumors. He also reveals in a new interview details about his upcoming album and that he would never listen to One Direction’s music.

In a nearly 7,000-word interview with Fader, Malik first debunks romantic rumors between any of the members of One Direction, despite conspiracy theories by shippers. He says the unfounded claims are “not funny,” and the group finds the rumor so “hard for them” that “they won’t naturally go put their arm around each other because they’re conscious of this thing that’s going on, which is not even true.”

The former One Direction singer also explains his exit, which boiled down to musical differences. “There was never any room for me to experiment creatively in the band,” he says. “If I would sing a hook or a verse slightly R&B, or slightly myself, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop, generic as [expletive], so they could use that version.”

Malik further states, “I wasn’t 100 percent behind the music. It wasn’t me…. As much as we were the biggest, most famous boy band in the world, it felt weird,” and while “I loved everything that we did, that’s not music that I would listen to. ”

Malik reveals he wanted to “go home from the beginning,” but just “didn’t know when” until that March day when he quit. He says, “I woke up on that morning… and was like, ‘I need to go home. I just need to be me now, because I’ve had enough.’” And with that, Malik left One Direction.

But he categorically denies that rumors of him cheating on then-fiancee Edwards while in Thailand had anything to do with his exit. “It wasn’t because of that that I left — that was just a contributing factor to everything. I’d already made my mind up before that.”

More importantly, he corrects the tabloid tales that he dumped Edwards with a text. He tells Fader, “I have more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message. I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship over four years like that. She knows that, I know that, and the public should know that as well.”

Now, Malik is focused on his upcoming album, which features songs of “different genres.” He explains, “They don’t really fit a specific type of music. They’re not like, ‘This is funk, this is soul, this is upbeat, this is a dance tune.’ Nothing is like that. I don’t really know what my style is yet. I’m kind of just showing what my influences are. Depending on what the reaction is, then I’ll go somewhere with that.”

Still, despite distancing himself from One Direction and its music, Malik reveals he’s going to meet up with Liam Payne and work on “some music.” Tell Gossip Cop what you think of Malik’s interview with Fader.
