Is Zac Efron frustrated because he thinks he looks “too handsome” in his role as serial killer Ted Bundy? That’s the claim in one of this week’s tabloids. Gossip Cop looked into the story and we can exclusively set the record straight.

Efron portrays Bundy in the upcoming film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, a biopic of the notorious serial killer who murdered dozens of women during the 1970s. According to the National Enquirer, however, the actor is having trouble getting into character because he’s too much of a “heartthrob.”

“Zac’s Killer Looks Make Him Yell Bloody Murder,” reads a headline in the latest issue of the magazine. A so-called “on-set spy” tells the outlet that after Efron watched the first footage from the upcoming film, he yelled out “I’m still too darn handsome!” The outlet’s questionable source adds, “Zac is other-level, crazy-movie-star-stunning. No matter how much they try toning down his handsomeness with makeup tricks, Zac magically still looks amazing on camera.”

However, one of the reasons that the good-looking Efron was cast in the role is because Bundy’s young female victims found him handsome and charming. The serial killer used his attractive appearance to lure women and gain their trust. In fact, a 2016 documentary about the murderer was titled Ted Bundy: A Handsome Devil. The decision to cast Efron as Bundy isn’t an example of Hollywood choosing a celebrity who’s too good looking for the real-life role their playing, but an intentional choice on the part of the producers. He’s supposed to be handsome, contrary to the claims in this ill-informed tale.

Last year, Bundy’s lawyer even said that Efron’s good looks made him the right choice to play Bundy in the movie. Regardless, Gossip Cop still checked in with a source involved in the production of Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, who exclusively assures us on background that Efron hasn’t complained about being “too handsome” for the role. Also, Efron has posted several behind-the-scenes photos and videos from the movie on Instagram, so he’s obviously excited about the project, and not disheartened while filming it.

It’s worth noting this isn’t the first time we’ve had to debunk nonexistent drama on the set of one of Efron’s movies. Gossip Cop previously corrected a story alleging that the actor was jealous of Dwayne Johnson getting more attention than him while shooting Baywatch. Clearly, the tabloids have very little insight into what goes on behind the scenes of the actor’s movies.
