Is Zac Efron “worried” his upcoming movie about serial killer Ted Bundy is “too gory”? According to one of this week’s tabloids, the actor’s film Extremely Wicked, Shocking Evil and Vile may be too “brutal” for audiences, and Efron is concerned that his performance may not be as well showcased, if some of his scenes are edited. Gossip Cop, however, looked into the claim, and we’re assured by a mutual friend of ours and Efron’s that the report is “untrue.”

In a piece titled, “Murder Movie Mess,” OK! alleges there’s “major drama surrounding” Efron’s new flick. A so-called “insider” is quoted as saying the film is “too gory and brutal for a mainstream release, so filmmakers are now scrambling to edit it into more of a psychological thriller.” The magazine’s supposed source further maintains the High School Musical star is being “patient” about the cuts, but is also “upset.”

“This was supposed to be Zac’s big shot at shedding his Disney past,” contends the publication’s purported “insider,” who seemingly never saw the actor in The Paperboy or Neighbors and its sequel Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, or any of Efron’s other R-rated movies of late, including Baywatch and Dirty Grandpa. The ill-informed tipster goes on to claim Efron “really tried to make this performance as edgy as possible and is worried that his best scenes will be cut.” But the film is not a graphic retelling of Bundy’s murders of three dozen women. In an interview a few months ago, Efron said the Bundy movie is more about “how the world was able to be charmed over by this guy.”

Actually, the only “mess” is the tabloid’s tale itself. As noted above, it is clearly clueless about the actor’s recent unDisney-like films. Additionally, the publication’s premise about the movie having to edit major scenes because it’s “too gory and brutal” is based on its misconception about what Extremely Wicked, Shocking Evil and Vile is really all about. Regardless, Gossip Cop checked in with an impeccable Efron insider, and we’re told the magazine’s story is “totally untrue.”

Admittedly, we’re not entirely surprised by the falsity of the article. A few months ago, Gossip Cop busted OK!’s sister outlet, the National Enquirer, when it published a piece about how Efron thought he was “too handsome” to play Bundy in the movie. But that’s among the reasons the actor was cast as Bundy. The real-life serial killer, who was the subject of a recent documentary titled, Ted Bundy: A Handsome Devil, was able to seduce his female victims, thanks to his charm and good looks. Extremely Wicked, Shocking Evil and Vile is slated for release in 2019.
