Did Woody Allen keep referring to Jim Belushi as “John” throughout the filming of his new movie Wonder Wheel? One of this week’s tabloids claims the director mistook the actor for his late brother without realizing he died, but Gossip Cop can set the record straight.

According to Star, Allen made a “grave mistake” by casting “the wrong Belushi” as Kate Winslet’s alcoholic husband in his new film Wonder Wheel, a post-war drama set in Coney Island. In the seemingly fabricated report, a so-called “source” is quoted as saying, “Jim noticed Woody always called him ‘John,’ as in his dead brother John Belushi.” The magazine’s questionable on-set “spy” goes on to ridiculously assert, “Jim didn’t bother to correct him and neither did anyone else. Who knows what’s going on in Woody’s head?”

But Gossip Cop investigated, and Allen’s rep assures us the story is “not true.” John Belushi, a “Saturday Night Live” veteran, famously died in 1982 of a drug overdose at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont. Obviously, Allen would have known that the iconic actor had died 35 years ago, and didn’t accidentally cast the wrong brother to star in Wonder Wheel. Additionally, the star-studded movie is set to hit theaters on December 1, so it’s likely that Star purposely timed the publication of its bogus article to coincide with the film’s release date.

What’s more, Jim spoke highly of Allen while discussing the film in a recent interview with Las Vegas Magazine. “Oh man… Woody is as gentle and wonderful a director as I’ve ever worked with,” the actor said. “He totally understands the actor and what you need and creates a feeling and environment that allows you to go full-out and risk 100 percent.” They obviously had a great working relationship, and the tabloid’s story is complete nonsense.
