A bizarre story in one of this week's tabloids claims Will Smith and Jada Pinkett are in an "open marriage" and "haven't slept together in six years." Gossip Cop can debunk the bogus premise. We've learned there's no truth to it.
After first claiming the spouses of nearly 21 years haven't been intimate in a long time, an alleged insider tells Star, "They like each other as people and they do stuff as a family, but that's mostly for the kids. Will and Jada could be in the same house together and not talk for days." The questionable source adds, "They allow each other the freedom to do what they want — with who they want — as long as they don't get caught."
The so-called "tipster" continues, "The truth is they have an open marriage. Their relationship is unconventional and they're very casual and relaxed about it. That's why they won't get a divorce." The suspicious source concludes, "They don't even seem like they're married right now, but they're happy with that."
Gossip Cop, however, checked in with a source close to Pinkett, who tells us on the condition of anonymity that the tabloid's story is nonsense. This idea of the spouses having an open relationship has cropped up before, but it's not accurate. It first started back in 2013 after Pinkett said in an interview with HuffPost Live, "I've always told Will, 'You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be OK.'"
Many people interpreted the actress's comments as a revelation that she has an open marriage, but Pinkett later clarified that she and Smith are in a committed relationship. The actress wrote in a Facebook post, "Here is how I will change my statement...Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so. This does NOT mean we have an open relationship...this means we have a GROWN one."
Pinkett made similar statements about her marriage during a 2015 interview on "The Howard Stern Show." The actress explained, "I'm not his watcher. He's a grown man. Here's what I trust — I trust that the man that Will is, is the man of integrity. So, he's got all the freedom in the world." Once again, Pinkett was explaining that she allows Smith to have freedom because she trusts him, not because they're in an open marriage.
Unfortunately, Star is now recycling the phony storyline and throwing in an additional angle about Smith and Pinkett not sleeping together anymore. It's all baseless. It's worth noting, Gossip Cop busted the tabloid in May for falsely claiming that Smith and Pinkett were headed for a divorce. This latest article says "they won't get a divorce" because they're in an open marriage. Not only does the outlet publish false stories about the couple, it can't even keep them straight.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
