Whoopi Goldberg Sister Act The View

Whoopi Goldberg reunited with some of her Sister Act co-stars on “The View” on Thursday. The reunion was held in celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary. Watch the video below!

Sister Act, which came out in May of 1992, stars Goldberg as a singer who is forced to go undercover as a nun while in the witness protection program. The film was a critical and financial success, and sparked a sequel, Sister Act: Back In The Habit. Goldberg, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the original flick, also starred in and produced the West End stage adaptation, which brought the musical movie to life. And last year on the ABC talk show, the Oscar winner surprised an actual nun on the program by donning her familiar costume and donating $10,000 to the woman’s church charity.

Now on today’s edition, many in the audience were appropriately dressed for the celebration. Goldberg revealed the crowd was actually filled with people who she had surprised at a recent anniversary screening of the film. Now the fans got to see not just Goldberg, but also co-stars Kathy Najimy and Wendy Makkena, as well as music supervisor Marc Shaiman. “I had no intention of singing. And then Marc said, ‘Oh, you’re singing,'” Goldberg recalled. She also joked that she was only called for the iconic part after Bette Midler and “a hundred million people” turned it down.

Maggie Smith, who played Mother Superior, couldn’t attend today’s event, but sent a video message in Goldberg’s honor. The comedienne now remarked, “I couldn’t believe she wanted to do the movie.” She and her co-stars also amusingly recalled pigging out together during the shoot in Las Vegas, and reminisced about working with Harvey Keitel. “I love Harvey. We had a blast,” Goldberg said. She was then happily stunned when Keitel came out on stage to join the fun. “Can you believe [it’s] 25 years?” she asked him. He then presented his old friend with a purple fur coat with her name embroidered as a nod to one of the movie’s scenes.

And for the big finale, Goldberg and her colleagues actually sang with several of the original choir nuns from the film. The comedienne even donned a big wig to channel her character’s look. They started with a somber rendition of “I Will Follow Him” before kicking it up a few notches. Watch the videos below!
