Whoopi Goldberg Crying The View

Whoopi Goldberg cried on “The View” on Thursday after interviewing Jorge Garcia and his family. The married father of two appeared via satellite after recently being deported to Mexico, while his wife and children were in the talk show’s New York City studio. Watch the video below.

Garcia was brought to the U.S. illegally when he was 10 years old. He’s lived in America for the last 30 years and took steps to make his immigration status legal. In fact, for more than a decade he worked with officials on maintaining his residence here in the U.S. and was granted several stays instead of being deported. But in November, the Detroit-based family man was told he would have to leave the country and return to Mexico. And on Monday, ICE officials oversaw his departure.

Now on “The View,” Goldberg began by explaining that Garcia was a tax-paying, law-abiding resident who cannot be helped by any DACA deal because he is one year too old. While he told the moderator he’s “sad but good,” as he stays with his aunt in Mexico City, his wife Cindy declared, “He was deported because he came into the country at 10 years old illegally and we tried to fix his status and the system failed us. It’s a broken immigration system and it needs to be fixed.”

And although Garcia’s 15-year-old daughter, Soleil, was composed as she gave advice for kids who find themselves in similar situations, his 12-year-old son, Jorge Jr., burst into tears after saying he was feeling “sad, angry.” Sunny Hostin left her seat to hold the young boy as he sobbed. Goldberg said, “The thing that gets me, [Garcia] did everything that he was supposed to do. He knew that he was not legal and he put himself on the path to make it better.”

Jorge Jr. continued to cry during the interview and Goldberg sighed heavily as she inquired whether the family has a support system, financially and emotionally. That’s when Cindy herself started crying, leading the comedic actress to comfort her. The family is hoping to visit Garcia in April or June, but as they now had the chance to video chat with him, Goldberg asked if there was anything the kids wanted to say to their dad. Soleil broke down, and Jorge Jr. did so again.

Their reactions made Goldberg herself become choked up. “It’s okay, baby,” she said as her own eyes filled with tears. “Thank you all for coming, because I think it’s important for people to understand this is not some random conversation. This is real people’s lives. And if you want to help, elect the people who are going to make sure that this does not happen again.” After the family was no longer on stage, Goldberg and the rest of “The View” co-hosts had a frank discussion about immigration and the Trump administration.
