White House Correspondents Dinner

The 2017 White House Correspondents’ Dinner takes place on Saturday, and Gossip Cop has a live stream. Watch below!

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an annual gala organized by the White House Press Association. Started in 1921, it’s an opportunity for members of the press corps to honor young journalists. Reporters from across the country, not just those covering Washington, D.C., typically attend, as does the president. Over the years, however, the formal event has taken on a party atmosphere. Recent dinners have been a hot ticket for A-list stars, who must be invited by a media outlet to gain entrance.

This year’s dinner, though, will be significantly different from years past. Earlier this year, a few publications announced they would not host their typical pre- or after-parties and would be boycotting the actual event due to Donald Trump’s treatment of the press. And even though the president traditionally participates in a comedic bit and gives a speech, in February Trump announced he won’t be attending the dinner. It will mark the first time in decades that a sitting president has skipped the gala.

Trump has also barred members of his administration from participating. Despite his absence, many top stars still aren’t going this year. And while a big name is usually lined up to host the dinner, giving a humorous speech that mocks both the media and the president, this year the association has opted to go with a lesser-known comedian, Hasan Minhaj. Those close to the organization have expressed hope that tonight’s dinner will be more focused on its main goal of awarding scholarships and showing support for a free press.

C-SPAN will be live streaming from inside the Washington Hilton. Check out the feed below, beginning at 9:30 p.m. Eastern.
