Is a boxing match between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mike Tyson really in the works? That’s the bizarre claim from one of this week’s new tabloids, but Gossip Cop has learned the truth.

A random and nonsensical new story in the National Enquirer says a group of wealthy Russian businessman recently approached Tyson and offered him $500,000 to step into the boxing ring with Putin. There’s no further explanation as to why the Russian leader wants to fight the former heavyweight boxing champion, but a supposed “source” tells the magazine, “Tyson is taking part in a big convention in New York organized by the Russians, and when it’s over they want to bring him back with them for a bout.”

Of course, such a matchup would be even more anticipated than the upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, but Gossip Cop is assured it’s not happening. Despite how absurd this story sounds, we still checked in with a rep for Tyson, who exclusively tells us the tabloid’s article is simply “not true.”

It should be noted, this isn’t the first time the Enquirer has arbitrarily linked the Russian president to a random celebrity. Gossip Cop called out the publication last year when it wrongly reported Lindsay Lohan wanted to date Putin so she could become a “Russian princess.” Shortly before that nonsense, we busted the magazine for falsely claiming Putin was involved in a “secret romance” with Pamela Anderson. It’s unclear why the tabloid keeps insisting on creating false narratives about the Russian president interacting with various stars, but there’s been no truth to any of it.
