Venus Williams caused a fatal car accident that killed a 78-year-old man earlier this month, according to a new police report. Cops say the tennis star is at fault for the crash, which took place in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on June 9.

The unfortunate incident occurred when Williams slowed down her SUV while driving westbound through an intersection, resulting in a car headed northbound smashing into her vehicle, which was jutting out into the road. The tennis player reportedly told authorities she had to slow down her SUV due to a traffic backup ahead, while the driver of the other car maintained she couldn’t hit the brakes in time to avoid hitting Williams’ decelerating vehicle.

The woman’s husband, identified as Jerome Barson, suffered head trauma during the crash and was transported to a hospital’s ICU, where he died two weeks later. His wife also sustained broken bones and other injuries during the crash, but she recovered. According to police records obtained by TMZ, cops have ruled that Williams “is at fault for violating the right of way of [the other driver].” Drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a factor in the accident. Gossip Cop has reached out to a rep for the tennis player for more information about the accident. (See update below.)

The report emerges the same week Williams is set to take the court to compete in her 20th Wimbledon. The five-time Wimbledon champion last won the title in 2008. As Gossip Cop reported, the tennis star’s sister, Serena, is pregnant with her first baby, and Venus accidentally announced last month she’s expecting a girl.

UPDATE: On Friday, June 30, Williams said in a statement on Facebook, “I am devasted [sic] and heartbroken by this accident. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Jerome Barson and I continue to keep them in my thoughts and prayers.”

UPDATE: “On Friday, July 8, police said in a new statement, “After the initial investigation was conducted, new evidence into the incident was located. Based on the evidence obtained in the ongoing investigation, it has been determined the vehicle driven by Venus Williams lawfully entered the intersection on a circular green traffic signal.”
