Vanessa Hudgens is not engaged to Austin Butler, despite speculation from a number of outlets because she was pictured wearing a ring. The actress and singer herself has slammed reports that her longtime boyfriend popped the question on her birthday. Hudgens took to social media to shoot down the claims.
The inaccurate claim first came from HollywoodLife, a site that tends to favor guessing and manufacturing stories over actually reporting and fact-checking. The outlet began its inaccurate piece on Hudgens by giddily exclaiming, "Wait, what?! Did Vanessa Hudgens decide to get married recently? The actress has been sporting a ring on that finger!" The blog blathered on about how she's been "sporting a very distinctive ring on her left ring finger since around her 29th birthday on Dec. 14 and we can't help wondering if, this year, Austin decided to give her the best present of all — a proposal!"
Continuing its guessing game, HollywoodLies, as it's also known, writes, "The ring in question has a definite vintage vibe... Could something like this be what a girl like Vanessa would want if Austin got down on one knee? We certainly think it's in the realm of possibility." And HollywoodLife is certainly wrong again. Joining that site down the path of inaccurate speculation was J-14. The kiddie-geared outlet posted an article titled, "Vanessa Hudgens Sparks Engagement Rumors After Showing Off a New Ring."
Shortly after HollywoodLies gushed about Hudgens "sporting a ring on that finger," the actress gave that website and others "the finger" when she tweeted, "I'm not engaged! I posted a pic. Not to show off my ring that I happened to throw on that finger after a long day of filming but to show off my haircut" (below).
Of course, the vast majority of legitimate entertainment news sites did not post any stories about Hudgens possibly being engaged because they either realized right away that's not how people announce they're getting married or, like Gossip Cop, they were told it wasn't (at that point) worth drawing attention to HollywoodLies' poor reporting. Of course, that outlet a few months ago was caught by Gossip Cop making up a fake news story about how Hudgens refused to see Zac Efron in Baywatch because she didn't want to see her ex-boyfriend "shirtless for two hours." That wasn't true, nor is its latest article about Hudgens being engaged.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
