Thursday’s series premiere of “Boy Band” featured a group of contestants called Uplift. Watch their performance in the video below!

As the name of the show suggests, “Boy Band” is a reality competition to find the next great boy band. On the first episode, “architects” Nick Carter, Emma Bunton and Timbaland narrowed the contestants down to 18. They were then divided into three groups of six.

The first group, Uplift, had to perform together so the panel could evaluate how they sounded with one another and how they excelled (or didn’t) individually. Over the next two weeks, the remaining groups will perform, too. But during the course of the series, the members in each group will be shuffled and eliminated. Ultimately, five singers will be left standing in the end and awarded a contract with Hollywood Records.

Uplift consists of Jay “J Hype” Gilbert, Sergio Calderon, Devin Hayes, Drew Ramos, Marcus Pendleton and Cameron Armstrong. For their first performance together, they sang and danced to Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like.” With Calderon, the song even became bilingual, and J Hype provided some beat-boxing. Based on the girls screaming in the audience, you’d think they were already a full-fledged, well-known act.

“That’s what I want to hear,” Carter exclaimed afterward, while Timbaland yelled, “That’s what I’m talkin’ about!” Carter went on to say, “You know what I like? Synchronized boy band dance moves sprinkled with a little sweet harmonies… I think I’m gonna steal some of those moves!” He singled out Calderon as being “fire” when he switched into Spanish, telling him, “I think you have a place in a boy band.”

Bunton commented, “Marcus, When you hit that stage, you are like pow! Cameron, your moves! I need you teach me some of those later.” And Timbaland told J Hype, “I love the breakdown, but I feel like you got some more than just beatbox. Don’t hide behind the beatbox.” Carter was also concerned about Hayes’ singing, but all agreed Ramos was a “star.”

One member of the group had to be eliminated, though. And it was Cameron Armstrong who was cut. Next week, the second group, Reverb, will take the stage. Check out the video of Uplift below!
