Tyler Perry received the Favorite Humanitarian award at the 2017 People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday. Check out the video below!

It was only announced on Tuesday that Perry would be this year’s Humanitarian honoree. The special award was introduced just a few years ago to recognize celebrities who have had a profound impact on society through charity efforts. Sandra Bullock was the inaugural recipient in 2013, followed by Jennifer Hudson (2014), Ben Affleck (2015), and Ellen DeGeneres (2016).

Now, as the fifth-ever winner, Perry was chosen for his efforts with the Perry Foundation, which he started in 2006. Through the organization, the entertainment mogul has partnered on philanthropic endeavors with Charity Water, Feeding America, and more. And with this award, Enterprise Rent-A-Car will be making a $100,00 donation to the Global Medical Relief Fund for Children on his behalf.

During the live PCAs broadcast on CBS, the award presentation was led by Kristen Bell, who paid tribute to Perry with a poignant speech (despite a broken teleprompter). When he took the stage himself, the actor and producer had plenty poignant words of his own to offer. “This is really, really incredible,” Perry humbly said.

The star, obviously not seeking recognition for his good deeds, admitted, “I don’t think about anything other than helping the people I’m trying to help.” He went on to say, “As I look at the state of the world and the state of country… no matter how dark it gets, we all have to be light for each other.”

“We’re all going through it together, and it’s my hope that I have become a balance keeper, because when I see all this darkness, all I want to do is bring some balance, bring some light,” he added. Watch full video of Bell and Perry’s speeches below.
