Twitter is reacting to former New York congressman Anthony Weiner being sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison for sexting with a 15-year-old girl. See social media reactions and tweets below.

The disgraced politician pled guilty in May to sending obscene material to a minor. The charge stemmed from his social media correspondence with a 15-year-old girl, who he asked to get naked and engage in sexually explicit behavior for him online. Weiner reportedly sobbed in court as Judge Denise Cote issued the nearly two-year sentence, telling the ex-congressman, “This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment.”

Shortly after the sentencing, Weiner became a trending topic on Twitter as users weighed in on the ruling. One person didn’t think the 21-month sentence was harsh enough, arguing, “A slap on the wrist. Shame on them.” And another user similarly expressed, “Anthony Weiner is a pedophile, he should be in prison for much longer than just 21 months.”

Another user stated, “Anthony Weiner rightfully gets jail time. But why does Donald get to be President when he brags about waking in on naked under age girls?” One person offered, “Proud of liberals for condemning Anthony Weiner. Conservatives don’t condemn sexual predators – they elect them POTUS & watch them on Fox.” And another user suggested Weiner be put “in the same cell as Jerry Sandusky,” the former Penn State football coach convicted of child molestation.

Meanwhile, One person joked, “On the plus side, by the time Anthony Weiner serves his 21 months in prison, all of his girlfriends should have their braces off.” “Anthony Weiner sentenced to 21 months, so he’ll be out in time to ruin the next presidential election for Democrats,” quipped another user. And one person conveyed, “I wonder how threatened the prosecutors and judge were by Hillary [Clinton] and Huma [Abedin]. No way in hell Anthony Weiner would only get 21 months otherwise.” These were just a few of the hundreds of tweets concerning Weiner’s sentencing.
