Tracee Ellis Ross opened the 2017 American Music Awards on Sunday with a hilarious and poignant monologue. Watch the video below!

Following an incredible duet performance by Kelly Clarkson and Pink, Ross excitedly took the stage to formally welcome everyone to the awards show. “I am thrilled to be hosting tonight, especially here on my home network of ABC,” the “Black-ish” star said. With her mom Diana Ross, one of the night’s honorees and a two-time AMAs emcee herself, in attendance, she noted, “We’re the first mother and daughter who have ever hosted the American Music Awards.” She went on to pay tribute to “American Idol” and Kelly Clarkson with an amusing rendition of “A Moment Like This,” and joked about recreating The Bodyguard, another honoree tonight, as the bodyguard.

Ross further said that she felt insecure to be hosting, cracking, “I don’t have an album out. I don’t have a cool stage name. I don’t even have beef with anyone. I tried tweeting Selena Gomez. I was like, ‘Hey bitch! You’re so beautiful!'” More seriously, she then gave credit to the movement women have been leading this year.

It was announced last Tuesday, less than a week before the AMAs, that Ross would be hosting this year’s ceremony. She follows in the footsteps of Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharoach (2016), Jennifer Lopez (2015) and Pitbull (2014, 2013). Ross was in chosen in part because her mom, Diana Ross, is the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. The actress said in a statement, “I am thrilled to host this special night which honors some of the greatest musical talents in our industry. And I’m especially thrilled to host this year when my mother is receiving the American Music Award for Lifetime Achievement.”

Ross is best known for starring on “Black-ish,” which earned her a Golden Globe earlier this year, but she also has hosting experience. She and Anthony Anderson, the co-star of her hit ABC comedy, emceed the BET Awards together in 2015 and 2016. Hours before tonight’s ceremony, Ross released an amusing video encouraging “Black-ish” fans to tune in. “One reason is I’m hosting. The second reason is that I’m hosting. The third reason is that I’m hosting,” she joked. “No, because it’s going to be an amazing night of powerhouse voices, incredible performances and you should really watch.” Check out video of Ross’ opening monologue below!
