Tom Petty is dead. The 66-year-old rocker died after being hospitalized on Sunday for an apparent cardiac arrest. He was reportedly placed on life support initially, before the decision was made to end such life-saving measures due to a lack of brain activity.

It was said Petty went into cardiac distress at his Malibu home, becoming unconscious and losing the ability to breathe. It’s unclear who was with him at the time, but EMTs rushed to the scene. Paramedics then raced Petty to the UCLA Hospital in Santa Monica in critical condition. Doctors at the medical facility then placed him on life support, reported TMZ. But at some point after, it was apparently decided to remove the life support.

Petty’s camp did not immediately address the medical emergency or his subsequent death. In fact, before the news broke, the performer’s web team on Monday posted a recap of his recent Hollywood Bowl concerts on his official site. The post read, “It’s 1:22 a.m., and the last lighting, video and sound cases are getting loaded up and pushed off the stage at the Hollywood Bowl, where Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers played three incredible sold-out, hometown shows to close out the band’s 40th Anniversary tour.”

The message continued, “Fifty-three shows. Twenty-four states. Twelve lighting crew. Eleven truck drivers. Nine in Production. Seven sound guys. Six backline crew. Six months. Five opening acts. Three countries. Three riggers. One legendary band and over one million legendary fans. Thank you to all!” Tragically, no one knew at the time that it would be Petty’s final tour.

The star, who would have turned 67 later this month, was a three-time Grammy winner. His last Grammy award came in 2009, when Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers earned Best Longform Music Video for Runnin’ Down a Dream. Petty also had a few acting roles over the years, including a recurring voice part on “King of the Hill.” Click to see celebrity reaction to Petty’s death.
