Tom Hanks is not angry that Meryl Streep got nominated for an Oscar for their movie The Post, while he got snubbed, despite a made-up tabloid report. Gossip Cop can exclusive debunk this nonexistent drama. We're told it's nonsense.
Streep broke her own record when she she scored her 21st Academy Award nomination last month, but according to the National Enquirer, Hanks isn't happy for his co-star. A so-called "source" tells the magazine, "Tom really thought he'd get a golden statue-nod, too, but when push came to shove, Meryl proved her star power can totally overshadow his, leaving the A-list actor in the dust."
The unreliable outlet further claims there's a rivalry between the Oscar winners, who supposedly didn't get along while filming their new drama. To back up this bogus assertion, the publication brings up a phony story that Gossip Cop already debunked. The tabloid says Hanks and Streep began feuding when the actor excluded her from a party he threw for the cast of The Post, but no such incident ever occurred.
In reality, Hanks and Streep get along very well and have great chemistry together, something the co-stars have demonstrated during the promotional tour for The Post. Last month on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the Oscar winners did hilarious impressions of each other's most famous roles. The two have also praised each other's talents in several different interviews.
Regardless, Gossip Cop still checked in with a rep for Hanks, who exclusively assures us the claim about the actor being jealous of Streep's Oscar nom is "totally untrue." We're further told, "He couldn't have been happier for Meryl." Oddly enough, this isn't the first time we've had to debunk a ridiculous story about supposed tension on the set of The Post.
Gossip Cop recently called out the Enquirer's sister publication, Star, for falsely claiming that Steven Spielberg had to shut down Streep's "diva behavior" during the shoot. Meanwhile, Hanks and Streep have maintained two of the most successful careers in the film industry for decades, and they didn't achieve that longevity by getting into fights on movies sets. Also, The Post is nominated for Best Picture, so it's not like Hanks has been completely shut out of the Oscars race.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
