Tom Cruise was a constant fixture in the tabloids in 2018, but the top rumor about the movie star came very early in the year. In January, Gossip Cop busted a tabloid for falsely claiming the actor was quitting Scientology to reunite with his estranged daughter Suri Cruise. As time has proven, that never happened.
Back in January, Star published a cover story claiming Cruise was ready to cut ties with his religion in order to repair his relationship with his then 11-year-old daughter, who he hasn't seen in several years. An alleged insider told the magazine, "If he wants her back, he'll have to walk away from the church... Leaving Scientology would be the toughest decision he'll ever have to make."
The outlet's supposed source further contended that Cruise feared the organization would "set out to destroy him" if he left, but he was hoping to cut a deal with the church "where he would be left in peace as long as he doesn't speak out against Scientology." The questionable insider added, "If Scientology declared open season on Tom, they could bury him."
When the story was first published in January, a source close to the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, assured us that Cruise had no plans to quit Scientology. That's become even more evident in the time since. This past July, Cruise purchased a condo in Clearwater, Florida, just one block from the Church of Scientology's international headquarters.
People magazine, a much more reliable celebrity news outlet than Star, noted in July that the movie star sold his mansion in Beverly Hills and was renovating a two-story penthouse apartment in Clearwater, which would be his new home base. Cruise's 23-year-old son Connor also lives in the area, as do other members of the his family.
In reality, Cruise has been a committed member of Scientology for more than 30 years, and never had any intention of leaving the church earlier this year. Instead, the movie star has since relocated near its headquarters. Meanwhile, the actor's estranged daughter lives in New York City with her mom Katie Holmes, who has primary custody of her. It's worth noting, the actress's rep has dismissed other father/daughter reunion stories in the past year.
There's certainly a lot of mystery surrounding Cruise's estrangement from Suri, but Star clearly never had any insight into the situation. The claim about the movie star quitting Scientology to reunite with his daughter never panned out, and it marks 2018's top wrong rumor about Cruise.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
