Is Tom Cruise really pursuing a romance with Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery? That's the ridiculous claim in one of the tabloids. Gossip Cop can set the record straight.

Cruise and Dockery happened to have been seated next to each other at last week's British Fashion Awards, where they were photographed having a friendly chat. This has resulted in Woman's Day teasing on its cover, "Tom Cruise & Downton Abbey Star: Yes! It's Love!" The accompanying article dials it back a bit, going with the tamer headline: "Tom & Michelle's Flirty Night Out!" Neither description is accurate.

An alleged insider says Cruise was "thrilled" to sit next to the actress at the awards show, and didn't waste any time getting to know her. "Tom is a charming man at the best of times, but he really laid it on thick with Michelle," adds the supposed source. "He was bowled over by her as soon as he saw her approaching the table. He barely looked at anyone else all night."

The outlet then acknowledges that Dockery is dating Jasper Waller-Bridge, the brother of Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. According to the alleged tipster, however, Cruise isn't too concerned about her being taken. "He found out later and was disappointed, but that wouldn't stop Tom," adds the seemingly made-up source. "He plans on pursuing her anyway. He's trying to arrange a coffee meeting with her ASAP."

The tabloid invented this phony narrative simply because Cruise and Dockery sat next to each other at an awards show. It's quite common for various celebrities to be seated together at these types of events. Woman's Day saw the photos of the two together and decided to create this fake storyline. Cruise isn't trying to steal the Downton Abbey actress from her boyfriend. A source close to the situation tells Gossip Cop the entire article is "absurd."

Two days after the British Fashion Awards, Dockery and Waller-Bridge were spotted holding hands at an afterparty for a screening of her upcoming movie, The Gentlemen. The couple, who've been dating for several months, were also photographed kissing in the backseat of a taxi while leaving the party. It's clear the Downton Abbey star is very happy in her new relationship, and the idea that Cruise is trying to swoop in is just ridiculous.

Unfortunately, we're not surprised by this baseless story, as Woman's Day prints a lot of nonsense about the Mission: Impossible star. Just last month, Gossip Cop busted the magazine for falsely claiming Cruise was upset about ex-wife Katie Holmes dating Justin Theroux. There was one major issue with that article: Holmes and Theroux aren't dating. Cruise wasn't troubled by his ex-wife's imaginary romance with The Leftovers star.

In September, the outlet made up a story about Holmes begging Nicole Kidman to help save her daughter Suri from Cruise and Scientology. That report was also a work of fiction. The tabloid has zero clue as to what's going on in the actor's personal life, so it comes up with these bogus scenarios instead.

Our Verdict

Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
