Did Tom Cruise ban Katie Holmes from the Met Gala? A new report claims the actor is the reason why his ex-wife didn't attend this year's ball. Gossip Cop, however, can debunk the claim.
According to OK! Australia, it was a "shock" that Holmes didn't attend the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual star-studded event earlier this month, and contends "it may not have been her choice" to skip the festivities. Citing the website Blind Gossip, the tabloid recounts a rumor about a "well-known actress" being unable to go to the gala because of its religious theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."
The magazine makes the assumption that the actress in question is Holmes, and that she was prevented from participating in the Catholic-themed event due to Cruise's well-known devotion to Scientology. The outlet quotes from the anonymous item on the gossip blog, "There were some conditions she agreed to in her divorce from her husband in order to collect child support. One was that she could not publicly support any religion except his."
The publication acknowledges that it's "strange to think Tom would still be controlling Katie so long after their 2012 split," and also admits that the "details of their quickie divorce were never made public." Still, the tabloid believes it's possible there was such a stipulation that would prevent Holmes from partaking in any religious event not tied to Scientology. A so-called "insider" claims in the story, "Katie wanted out of the marriage so badly, she agreed to the terms."
But these allegations don't make much sense. While it's asserted, based on the blind item, that Holmes cannot "publicly support any religion" but Scientology, she hasn't shown any connection to the Church in nearly six years. She also hasn't publicly shunned Catholicism; actually quite the opposite. During a 2016 appearance on "The Late Late Show With James Corden," Holmes not only shared her favorite Christmas song, but actually showed off the tap dance she did at a Christmas show as a kid. That same year, Holmes spoke on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" about how she still goes caroling and sings "12 Days of Christmas."
And back in 2014, Holmes even revealed daughter Suri's Christmas wish list. Clearly, then, the "Dawson's Creek" star has no problem publicly showing her faith. As such, the claim that she couldn't go to the Met Gala due it to having a Catholic theme and a purported religious ban from Cruise doesn't hold up. And while OK! is relying on the anonymous blog post from Blind Gossip, Gossip Cop also checked in with a rep for Holmes, who tells us on the record that the real reason she didn't attend the ball was because she was "working" out of town.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
