Tom Cruise and Jane Fonda are not dating, despite supposed "romance rumors." This untrue story was sparked simply because the screen legends appeared at the same promotional event. Gossip Cop can bust this made-up claim.

Cruise and Fonda were among the many stars at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last month, where various projects were teased and previewed. During the presentation for Paramount on April 25, the pair shared the stage, along with other celebrities like Simon Pegg and Taraji P. Henson. Now nearly two weeks later, New Idea is making hay out of Cruise and Fonda's joint appearance, alleging their "flirting was evident to everyone and they couldn't keep their hands off each other."

"Tom was hanging on Jane's every word, and she was touching his arm repeatedly and having a lot of fun," a so-called "onlooker" is quoted as saying. The purported eyewitness further contends, "In fact, some were even wondering if there was more to their obvious connection and whether their chemistry would eventuate into something more." The tabloid also cites an alleged "insider," who claims, "Tom and Jane were certainly very taken with each other and everyone was talking about it."

Despite their roughly 25-year age difference, it's maintained Fonda is the "first woman in a really long time who's managed to captivate" Cruise, who was "last rumored to be dating his [Mission: Impossible] co-star Vanessa Kirby." The gossip magazine contends now "tongues are wagging" over the May-December pair potentially being a new couple. Yet Gossip Cop investigated, and these "romance rumors" are solely coming from New Idea. No other outlet has reported anything about Cruise and Fonda supposedly engaging in an obvious public flirtation and striking up a relationship.

It seems like the publication just jumped to conclusions, but its logic is faulty. Fonda was seen touching Cruise on stage, but as Getty Images photos from the event show, she also held hands with Henson, and the other stars in attendance were cozying up to one another, too. This was a feel-good, platonic display at a celebratory event, not a sign of a romance blossoming. What's more is that Fonda actually just told "Extra" that she's "not dating any more." "I'm 80. I've closed up shop down there," she quipped in an interview published on Monday.

Additionally, the tabloid proves itself to be clueless with its reference to Kirby. As Gossip Cop has reported multiple times, and the actress herself has confirmed, Kirby and Cruise never dated. The actor has been publicly single since his divorce from Katie Holmes in 2012. The gossip media often tries to link him to different actresses, usually just due to Cruise crossing paths with female stars through the course of his career. That's exactly what's misguidedly going on here.

Our Verdict

Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
