The Weeknd was not “dissing” Selena Gomez when he tweeted about “Stranger Things,” despite an absolutely absurd claim. The ridiculous assertion is just another example of some of the nonsense that’s been published since the couple split. Gossip Cop can set the record straight.
“Is The Weeknd Dissing Selena Gomez With This ‘Stranger Things’ Tweet?” asks HollywoodLife, which also urges readers in its headline to “see” the “shady message.” The actual story begins with the webloid writing, “While everyone else you knew was binge-watching ‘Stranger Things,’ Selena Gomez & The Weeknd were going through a nasty breakup. Now, looks like The Weeknd is easing his pain with Eleven & the gang — but is he also taking shots at his ex?”
Here is the full extent of The Weeknd’s tweet, which he sent on Tuesday night: “Dodging STRANGER THINGS spoilers is the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced…” He then jokingly told a follower who replied with a spoiler, “I know you’re a fan and showed love through out years but I will never forgive you for this comment.” He capped off the response with the laughing emoji.
What does any of this have to do with Gomez? Absolutely nothing, but HollywoodLies is trying to connect The Weeknd’s remark how hard it is to avoid spoilers to his breakup with the singer-actress. The judgmental site writes, “Um, REALLY? Harder then breaking up with your girlfriend of 10 months? Interesting…” Yet the webloid also adds, “Whether this tweet is a subtle slam at Selena, we couldn’t say.”
Well, Gossip Cop can say: The Weeknd’s tweet had zero connection to Gomez and was not in any way intended to be a reflection of his feelings about their split. He was merely expressing a sentiment about “Stranger Things” that many others have shared. In fact, due to Halloween and the recent release of the Netflix show’s second season, a number of stars have tweeted about the spooky series in recent days, including Niall Horan and Khloe Kardashian. In fact, similar to The Weeknd, Kardashian tweeted, “I’m only on season one so no spoilers please.”
But here’s HollywoodLies accusing The Weeknd of throwing shade even though he essentially posted the same thing. The truth is that the only wrongdoing here is on the part of the blog itself, which is seeking to capitalize on the end of his relationship with Gomez by any means necessary. It reminds Gossip Cop of OK!, which actually alleged The Weeknd dressed up as Justin Bieber for Halloween when he really just posted a photo of himself in normal clothing before a night at a club. These outlets are majorly reaching with sensational assumptions instead of doing actual reporting.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
