“The View” co-hosts had a debate on Tuesday about the Notre Dame graduates who walked out of Mike Pence’s commencement speech. Watch the video below.

On the ABC talk show, Whoopi Goldberg showed footage of students leaving the graduation ceremony as Pence spoke. She then asked, “Isn’t that what civil disobedience is supposed to be?” Responded Jedediah Bila, “They have a right to do it. But it bothers me that younger generations have a hard time listening to people that they disagree with.”

She continued, “The message needs to be it’s okay, but you don’t always have to get up and walk out.” Joy Behar countered, however, “They’re not there to listen or not listen. They’re there to make a point. They’re walking out to make a point.” Sunny Hostin agreed, “It’s the bedrock of our society to walk out and make these points.”

And she’s a Notre Dame graduate herself. “This something that is a tradition for Notre Dame. And I want my Notre Dame, fellow members and graduates and alums, to stand up for what they believe in. That’s what we should be doing,” Hostin said. Bila replied, “But part of that should be a diversity of thought. They don’t have to agree with him.”

Goldberg pushed back, “But sometimes, if you know what somebody has to say, you don’t want to hear it. Most of these folks made a very specific decision because what he’s about affects them.” She went on, “When you’re sitting with someone who says that, you don’t want to sit with it. You don’t want to disrupt it. You don’t want to yell. You want to walk out.”

Bila tried arguing, “If we want to be a country that has some unity, you have to be able to sit and listen.” But Goldberg shot back, “No, what needs to happen [is] stand up and say some of what we’re doing is not good for America.” Check out the video below.
