On Friday’s “The View,” the co-hosts reacted to Donald Trump being under investigation for obstruction of justice. Watch the video below.

On Wednesday night, the Washington Post reported special counsel Robert Mueller was investigating whether Trump obstructed justice when he encouraged James Comey to drop the FBI probe of Mike Flynn, and then fired the FBI director. On Friday morning, Trump seemed to confirm on Twitter that he is indeed under investigation. The ABC talk show, however, taped its episode on Thursday, so the panelists were unable to weigh in on the president’s apparent confirmation of it, just the news that he might be under investigation.

Noting the news came on the same day Trump turned 71, Joy Behar amusingly asked, “Do you think Mueller sent him a card and it said, ‘Happy birthday and you’re under investigation’?” Since Sunny Hostin is a former federal prosecutor herself, Behar turned to her for an expert opinion. Of obstruction, she said, “It’s a federal crime and to prove it, they’d have to find that he had the specific intent to impede a judicial investigation.” And while both women felt Trump appeared to show intent, Hostin said it would be hard to prove.

Sara Haines also noted the division of public opinion, saying, “A lot of people are saying clearly there’s no obstruction and others are ‘how can this not be illegal?'” And Hostin also pointed out, “There certainly is a case for obstruction, but that case would have to go Congress and it’s a Republican-led Congress, so it’s unlikely he’ll be impeached.”

The group also discussed Trump’s administration decrying leaks of such information, which Hostin acknowledged is “illegal.” That said, she stated, “I think we can all agree leaking is never appropriate. Leaking generally is classified information, and that’s a real problem, but I don’t think we can hide the ball here. The real issue is did the president of the United States obstruct justice?”

Jedediah Bila also suggested that Republicans would prefer Mike Pence to be president, arguing, “Unfortunately Donald Trump is an impediment to policy, too.” Behar further brought up Trump deeming the investigation a “witch hunt.” “Now, where have we heard that before?” she asked, going on to insist, “This is becoming Watergate. Both Nixon and Trump denied anything having to do with illegal activities. Both Nixon and Trump attacked the news media and called them the enemy.”

And speaking of the media, it was also noted how interested the public seems to be in this subject, which pleased Haines, who pointed out that citizen participation is a hallmark of democracy. “If nothing else, I’m glad people are tuning into this,” she said. That led Joy Behar to say how ratings are up all over TV, including for their own program.

“Basically, we can thank you, Donald,” she cracked, going on to quip, “They always ask me to say something good about Donald. Thank you for making our ratings go up.” Check out the video below. NOTE: The video is no longer available.
