The View Betsy DeVos Booed

“The View” co-hosts on Thursday debated whether it was appropriate to boo Betsy DeVos at a commencement at a historically back college. Watch below.

On Wednesday, DeVos was heckled as she gave a commencement speech at Bethune-Cookman University, while other students turned their backs as she spoke. Video of the situation went viral, with some slamming the graduates’ behavior and others calling out the education secretary for speaking at an HBCU after making controversial comments about such schools earlier this year.

On the ABC talk show, Whoopi Goldberg argued, “The students did what you’re supposed to do when you’re protesting a speaker. You’re not supposed to say you can’t come. But you are allowed to protest.” Jedediah Bila countered, “It read as disrespectful to me, though… To me, that’s rude.” Sunny Hostin shot back, “It’s your right, though, under the constitution.”

Joy Behar was in the middle. “The booing shouts you down, you can’t hear what they’re saying. Turning your back is perfectly legitimate… I didn’t need the booing,” she said. Sara Haines also pointed out that for the many others at the ceremony who didn’t have vocal objections, “your protest interferes with their experience as well, so [just] turning around fixes that.”

Goldberg and Hostin, though, were especially angry that DeVos was at the school in the first place. “Call me a bonehead, I’m a bonehead, but when you are the head of education and you don’t know black colleges were not a freaking choice… you don’t have any business going there,” the moderator said, referring to DeVos calling HBCUs the “pioneers” of “school choice” back in February.

In actuality, such colleges and universities were started due to discrimination, as predominantly white schools of higher education would not admit African-Americans. With that in mind, Hostin exclaimed, “We know that our ancestors fought for the right for us to sit in that university, and to invite Betsy DeVos who understands nothing about that as the commencement speaker is a slap in the face to the community.” She and Goldberg further called it a “poor choice” and “inappropriate.”
