Johnny Depp

Born John Christopher “Johnny” Depp II on June 9, 1963, the actor’s foray into showbiz began with an interest in music. He played in bands throughout the 1980s before segueing into acting.

His first major screen role came in 1984’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” before scoring a leading part in the television series “21 Jump Street.” The show gave Depp teen idol status, which he played up in the movie “Cry-Baby.”

In 1990, Depp starred in “Edward Scissorhands,” which marked his first of many collaborations with filmmaker Tim Burton, and his first Golden Globe nomination. He received critical acclaim for the project, as well as for “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” which followed three years later, along with “Benny & Joon,” which gave him his second Globe nod.

Depp scored his third Golden Globe nomination for 1994’s “Ed Wood,” and steadily worked throughout the rest of the 1990s in movies like “Donnie Brasco” and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” His career got a major boost in 2003 with “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Depp’s turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Disney action-adventure flick, and its sequels, has become one of his most iconic roles, and the original movie led to a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

A second Academy Award nod came for “Finding Neverland,” followed by another Golden Globe nomination after the 2005 release of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” In 2007, Depp finally won a Golden Globe, which was given for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for “Sweeney Todd.” The part also earned Depp a third Oscar nomination.

Subsequent films included “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Tourist,” which led to more Golden Globes nominations, and the animated “Rango.” Depp, however, began struggling at the box office, with movies like “The Lone Ranger” and “Transcendence,” which were considered financial failures.

In 2014, he was part of the ensemble cast of “Into The Woods,” but still struggled to draw moviegoers on his own in early 2015 with “Mortdecai.” Upcoming films starring Depp include “Black Mass,” based on the real-life Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger, an “Alice in Wonderland” sequel, and another “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie.

Depp was briefly married to Lori Anne Allison in the 1980s when he was a musician. He went on to have engagements with Jennifer Grey, Sherilyn Fenn, and Winona Ryder, followed by a four-year romance with Kate Moss. In 1998, he embarked on a long-term relationship with Vanessa Paradis, and they later welcomed two children, Jack and Lily-Rose.

After 14 years together, the couple split in 2012, and Depp began dating his “The Rum Diary” co-star Amber Heard. Depp and Heard got engaged in early 2014, and the two later married in February 2015.
