Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck was born as Benjamin Geza Affleck-Boldt on August 15, 1972 in Berkeley, California. His family moved to Massachusetts when he was three-years-old. Affleck began his acting career when he was a child starring in the 1984 PBS children’s series “The Voyage of the Mimi.” As a teenager, he appeared in a number of TV films and commercials.

Affleck moved to Los Angeles when he was 18, studying Middle Eastern affairs at Occidental College while also searching for acting work. During the early ’90s, Affleck nabbed supporting roles in such films as “School Ties, “Dazed and Confused” and “Mallrats.” Affleck scored his first lead role in Kevin Smith’s 1997 romantic-comedy “Chasing Amy.” That same year, Affleck co-starred and co-wrote the drama “Good Will Hunting” alongside friend Matt Damon. The duo won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film.

Affleck went on to appear in his first blockbuster with 1998’s “Armageddon.” Later that year, he played a supporting role in the period comedy “Shakespeare in Love,” starring his then-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow, who he dated from 1997 to 2000. Affleck’s star continued to grow during this time, and he went on to star in such films as “Dogma,” “Reindeer Games,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Changing Lanes,” “The Sum of All Fears” and “Daredevil.”

Affleck dated Jennifer Lopez for 18 months from 2002 to 2004 after meeting on the set of “Gigli.” They became engaged in November 2002, but called off their wedding a few months later. Both stars have since blamed the breakup on the extensive media scrutiny surrounding their relationship. The actor began dating Jennifer Garner in mid-2004 after initially striking up a friendship on the sets of “Pearl Harbor” and “Daredevil.” They were married in June 2005 and share three children together, daughters Violet (born December 2005) and Seraphina (born January 2009), and son Samuel (born February 2012).

Affleck and Garner announced their separation in June 2015, and officially filed for divorce in April 2017, at which time the actor moved out of the guesthouse on the family’s property. The ex-spouses are seeking joint physical and legal custody of their children.

The actor is also heavily involved in politics, having campaigned on behalf of a number of Democratic presidential nominees and donated to the campaigns of a number of other Democratic politicians. He’s also spoken out against the paparazzi targeting the children of celebrities, and has called for legislation to prevent photographers from snapping photos of kids.

After a number of flops in the mid-2000’s, Affleck made a big career comeback by embarking on directing career. His debut was the 2007 crime-drama “Gone Baby Gone,” which starred his younger brother Casey. Affleck followed it up by writing, directing and starring in 2010’s “The Town” and 2012’s “Argo,” which won the Oscar for Best Picture. After next starring in the hit thriller “Gone Girl,” Affleck suited up as Bruce Wayne/Batman in 2016’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” He’s set to reprise the role in the upcoming “Justice League,” as well as in a solo spinoff movie.
