Suri Cruise is "desperate to see her father," Tom Cruise, according to a new tabloid report. But while it's true dad and daughter remain estranged, no one is talking to a gossip magazine about the 11-year-old's personal feelings. Gossip Cop can bust this story.

The new cover of OK! features the teaser, "Suri's Plea: Daddy, Why Won't You See Me?" Inside the edition, the outlet alleges the young girl is "wondering why the megastar is MIA." A so-called "friend" of Katie Holmes is quoted as saying, "She's at an age where she needs her father's love. Any child in her position would naturally begin to question why her father won't see her." The publication then asserts that the purported pal "speculates that 'surely' the tween has reached out to Tom, asking him to talk or visit, to no avail."

But if this was really a person close to Holmes, surely he or she would know for a fact whether or not Suri has "reached out to Tom," instead of merely speculating. And from there, the tabloid's alleged tipster merely offers obvious conclusions, such as saying that with so much time apart, Tom "can't possibly know his daughter... and she must know even less about him." Then, readers are given what is already considered common, well-known information about Holmes cutting ties with Scientology following her divorce from Tom, making her and Suri "suppressive persons" with whom he is not supposed to have contact.

"All any little girl wants is to spend time with her dad. Suri's situation with Tom is heartbreaking," a source supposedly says, with the aforementioned "friend" maintaining, "It's enough to make you cry." Actually, it's pretty tear-inducing that the gossip media continues to focus on an innocent young child in this way. While it would be hard to argue that the father and daughter's separation isn't upsetting, it is also disturbing that the gossip media continually exploits the situation.

This particular angle isn't even original. The magazine's sister outlet, Star, ran a very similar piece last October about Suri making a "heartbreaking plea" to see Tom. When we busted the story, Holmes' spokesperson ripped the publication for putting the young girl, whom the rep rightfully called a "private citizen" on its cover. Now OK! has saw fit to feature an image of Suri on its own cover. This faux concern for her well-being is clearly hypocritical and disingenuous.

However much she does or doesn't suffer from not having a relationship with her dad, the circumstances aren't made any better by slapping her picture on the front of tabloids. And it's because Holmes' camp so much values and prioritizes Suri's privacy that no "friend" of hers would ever dare talk to such a magazine about her and Tom, Gossip Cop is told. She may occasionally appear in the spotlight, such as when Suri briefly appeared on stage at Jingle Ball last month, but the only real "plea" is the one Gossip Cop is about to make: Stop making-up stories about celebrity children.

Our Verdict

Gossip Cop believes there to be elements of truth, but the story is ultimately misleading.
