Will the Spice Girls sing the theme song for the next James Bond movie? A new report claims it’s a strong possibility. Gossip Cop, however, is hearing otherwise.

The questionable article appears in the new issue of the National Enquirer, which is declaring in a headline, “Spice Girls Really Really Want Next OO7 Song!” The story claims there’s “one big reason” Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Geri Haliwell, Mel C, and Mel B are “talking about reuniting.” That’s alleged to be to “record the theme song for the new James Bond movie.”

“It’s crazy that the biggest British girl group of all time hasn’t sung the theme song to the biggest British spy franchise ever,” so-called “sources” are quoted as saying. Gossip Cop isn’t sure how the purported statement is from a group of people. Nevertheless, these supposed insiders go on to assert, “Adele and Sam Smith are in talks about returning, but the Spice Girls look like they’ve got this one in the bag.” A photo of the singers is even illustrated with a speech bubble that exclaims, “Now we’re all about Bond girl power!”

But James Bond 25, as the untitled film is currently called, doesn’t even have a director yet. Earlier this week, it was reported Danny Boyle was “high” on producers’ wish list, but no formal offer had been extended at that point. With no director on board, it makes little sense that a music act would already be courted for the theme song. The chosen filmmaker would have significant say in such a decision and without a director at the helm right now, it is highly unlikely the Spice Girls actually have the gig “in the bag.”

Additionally, when Gossip Cop inquired with a rep for the iconic group about the magazine’s claims that the theme song is driving their alleged reunion, we were directed towards Beckham’s most recent comments about a Spice Girls reunion. She told Women’s Wear Daily on Tuesday, “There is nothing tangible… There is no tour, there is no recording.” The songstress-turned-designer stressed that her recent hangout with her fellow singers wasn’t about embarking on a new project but “protecting the legacy.”

“We’re just looking at how we pass that message, as opposed to us going on tour or recording or doing a TV show. It’s not about that,” she insisted. While their plans could of course change in the future, singing the new James Bond theme song is clearly not on the Spice Girls’ agenda right now.
