So You Think You Can Dance Recap July 17 2017

“So You Think You Can Dance” kicked off the Academy round for season 14 on Monday’s show. Get the full recap below!

As Gossip Cop has reported, the new season of “So You Think You Can Dance” premiered in June. After season 13, dubbed “The Next Generation,” focused on young kids, the FOX competition returned to its original format this year. Aspiring dancers between the ages of 18 and 30 were invited to try out in New York and Los Angeles. During the auditions, which aired as the season’s first four episodes, roughly 100 contestants were invited to move on to the next phase of the competition.

At The Academy, all the contenders invited to the call-backs had to meet with the “So You Think You Can Dance” All-Stars and go to choreography sessions. As the week went on, the All-Stars narrowed down the crop of dancers, eventually choosing one each to take to the live shows as the season 14 Top 10. This time around, the 10 All-Stars are Gaby Diaz, Comfort Fedoke, Marko Germar, Jasmine Harper, Allison Holker, Jenna Johnson, Paul Kamiryan, Robert Roldan, Cyrus Spencer and Fik-Shun.

The first Academy episode kicked off with a massive dance number choreographed by Mandy Moore and featuring every single one of this year’s competitors. Then each dancer had to perform a solo routine in front of the All-Stars. If the majority was in favor, the person would move on to the choreography challenges. If not, they were cut from the competition. Among the immediate standouts were Logan Hernandez, Chaz Wolcott, Jensen Arnold, Lex Ishimoto, and partners Kristina and Vasily.

Approximately 70 dancers survived that first cut, and then were tasked with joining Nappy Tabs in the hip-hop choreography class. In just one hour, they all had to master a routine to perform for the All-Stars. Here, Kaylee Millis and Dassy Lee were among the favorites. Those who failed to impress were axed, those in the middle of the pack were sent on to the next choreography stage, and those who excelled were invited by the All-Stars to join one of their teams.

If more than one All-Star wanted a particular contestant, it was up to that dancer to pick the pro with whom he or she wanted to work. All the while they knew that eventually, each All-Star’s team of four would only have one person left standing in the end for the live shows. The first put in that enviable position was Kevin Davis, Jr., who had several of the pros fighting over him. He ultimately chose to join Holker’s team. Meanwhile, Lee picked Fik-Shun and Hernandez picked Holker, too, while Millis went with Spencer.

Fedoke, Germar, Diaz, Harper, Johnson and Kamiryan added dancers to their teams, too. Among those surprisingly let go during the episode were Darius Hickman and Arnold’s partner Tristan Sosa. Next week, the Academy continues with the contemporary and ballroom sessions as more dancers are cut and others are added to All-Star teams.
