The cold open of “SNL” began with Jason Aldean doing a tribute to the victims of the Las Vegas shooting on Sunday night that claimed the lives of 58 innocent people and injured close to 500 more. He sang Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.” Watch the “Saturday Night Live” video below.

As Gossip Cop reported, gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on Sunday from his Mandalay Bay Casino hotel room down at concertgoers at the Route 61 Harvest Festival, where Aldean was in the midst of performing. The result was the deadliest shooting in U.S. history. So far, no one has been able to determine why Paddock went on his murderous rampage.

The nation has remained stunned by this senseless violence. And while “Saturday Night Live” often makes fun of the week’s news, the shooting in Las Vegas has made it difficult for the nation to find humor in virtually anything. For that reason, the sketch comedy show skipped its usual political-based cold open jokes in favor of remembering the victims of the Las Vegas shooting.

In the past, “SNL” has opened the show with tributes to those affected by various tragedies. In November 2015, following the Paris attacks that claimed the lives of 130 people and injured more than 350 others, cast member Cecily Strong simply stood on the stage and said in both French and English that “our love and support” was with the people of France. She added, “We stand with you.”

In December 2012, following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that left 28 dead, the New York City Children’s Chorus opened “SNL” with a poignant rendition of “Silent Night.” And shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, “Saturday Night Live” began with a few words from New York’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani, flanked by members of the New York Fire Department. There was also a touching performance by Paul Simon of “The Boxer.”
