The cold open of the “SNL” season finale mocked earlier in the season when Kate McKinnon simply came out on the “SNL” stage dressed as Hillary Clinton and performed “Hallelujah.” This time, Donald Trump sang the song surrounded by Mike Pence, Steve Bannon, Eric and Donald Jr., Kellyanne Conway, and Scarlett Johansson as Ivanka. Last week, in keeping with the comedy program’s directive this year of opening its shows with political sketches, “SNL” poked fun of the president’s interview with Lester Holt in which he addressed the firing of FBI Director James Comey. Trump explained that he thought, “He’s investigating Russia. I don’t like that. I should fire him.”

“SNL” had a lot to choose from during for its final show of the year. On Monday, it was revealed that Trump shared classified information with the Russians that had been secretly gathered by Israeli intelligence. The following day it emerged that the president had asked Comey to end his investigation into former national security advisor Michael Flynn’s ties to Russia. And at the end of the week, it was reported that when Trump met with Russian officials in the White House in early May, he told them he fired Comey because “he was crazy, a real nut job.” Instead, it decided to mock itself with Trump singing “Hallelujah.”

As Gossip Cop has previously noted, virtually every cold open during the 2016-2017 season of “Saturday Night Live” has been tied to politics and the presidency. Among the best opens this year were when “SNL” mocked the presidential debates between Trump and Hillary Clinton. The show spoofed the first debate in which Trump kept interrupting Clinton by saying “wrong.” The second debate parodied how Trump walking around Clinton, as well as the questions from people sitting in the Town Hall, including red sweater-wearing Ken Bone. And the comedy series nailed the third debate during which Trump called Clinton a “nasty woman” and said he was going to get the “bad hombres” out of the U.S.

Another memorable cold open this past season was Trump’s first press conference was lampooned by “Saturday Night Live.” The program took aim at the president calling CNN “fake news.” Mostly, though, the cold open focused on the inaccurate reports about hookers engaging in “golden showers” while Trump was once in Russia. In the bit, Trump talked about creating a steady “stream” of jobs; it being a “golden” time for Americans; and him asking the press corps, “You’re in?” about whether they would support his initiatives.
