Are Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber having a "secret wedding" in Barbados? That's a rumor that's been circulating in the gossip media. But Gossip Cop can debunk the claims.
According to OK! Australia, the "reunited lovebirds are saying 'I do.'" The tabloid asserts that even though Gomez and Bieber only recently got back together, they're "more in love than ever, with the pair believed to be talking about tying the knot in early 2018." While no specific date is given, it's alleged the couple is "considering the luxurious Sandy Lane hotel in Barbados for their wedding."
Other possible "romantic wedding locations" under consideration supposedly include Mexico and Hawaii. "They want something small and intimate," a so-called "insider" is quoted as saying. But, "more than anything," contends the gossip magazine, "Selena longs for her mom's blessing." The outlet contends that since Gomez's family has voiced "disapproval" of the relationship, she's been forced to make a "bittersweet" decision. Alleges the purported tipster, "Since both Justin and Selena want the wedding to be drama-free, without any protests or interventions, they've decided to marry in secret."
Why, then, would an "insider" be leaking their alleged plans? That's not the only reason to be suspicious of this tale. Upon investigating these allegations, Gossip Cop made a curious discovery. Some of the quotes, such as the line about a wedding "without any protests or interventions," were used in a Life & Style report this month that claimed Bieber and Gomez were engaged and planning to "secretly marry." Even some of the statements that aren't quotes, such as "talking about tying the knot in early 2018," are word-for-word the same. How can this be?
Allow Gossip Cop to explain: Both the Australian version of OK! and the American tabloid Life & Style are published by Bauer Media Group. And they apparently share content, seemingly believing people won't realize the same information appears in two different publications with slight alterations. This should not be misconstrued as the outlets jointly relying on the same trustworthy "insider." Rather, it seems people who work for the company manufactured the narrative with the intent of it appearing in both its Australian publication and its American one.
But far from wedding planning, Gomez is currently vacationing in Mexico without Bieber. And while it's true Gomez has issues with her mom right now, the couple is not planning to marry behind her family's back in Barbados or anywhere else. Don't be fooled just because this rumor is being peddled in the U.S. and abroad.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
