Selena Gomez underwent a kidney transplant earlier this summer, receiving the organ from close friend and fellow actress Francia Raisa. Following months of extensive testing, it was determined that most of Gomez’s immediate family couldn’t donate the much-needed kidney, but Raisa was able to help after she successfully matched for the life-saving surgery. Now, Gomez is opening up about her procedure and recovery.

Early Thursday morning, Gomez posted an Instagram photo of herself and Raisa in hospital beds (below), and explained in the accompanying caption, “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.”

“I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery,” wrote Gomez before expressing, “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

Since recovering from the kidney transplant surgery, Gomez has begun shooting Woody Allen’s upcoming movie in New York. And this past week, the actress and singer has been attending events associated with New York Fashion Week to promote the launch of her new Coach Selena Grace bag.

As Gossip Cop reported, Gomez revealed in 2015 she had been battling lupus, a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage the skin, joints and organs. That same year, she opened up for the first time about her illness in a Billboard cover story, explaining how lupus temporarily sidelined her career. The singer shared, “I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke.”

In 2016, Gomez canceled her “Revival World Tour” to focus on her health. She said at the time, “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.” Gomez further stated, “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.”

Earlier this year it was announced that Gomez was funding lupus research at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. She made a generous donation to the school to start the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research. The money Gomez gave is funding a pilot program to research how to treat lupus complications.
