Is Selena Gomez on a "downward spiral" because she and Justin Bieber have apparently split? That's what one tabloid wants readers to believe. But Gossip Cop can debunk the story and show how the claims are demonstrably false.
In its latest issue, OK! alleges Gomez is "in turmoil" and her "friends are urging her to seek help." A so-called "insider" is quoted as saying, "Selena is a mess. She went from being on top of the world to dealing with nonstop relationship drama. She feels so demoralized and alone." Part of the problems are said to stem from the "impossible position" she was put in by her mom, Mandy Teefey, not approving of her rekindled romance with Bieber.
"She felt she couldn't go on seeing Justin if she wanted a relationship with her mom," contends the gossip magazine's supposed source, who claims that Gomez now "feels a lot of resentment toward Mandy about the decision she made, and they're barely speaking. So she's essentially lost the two main relationships in her life, which could be a recipe for disaster."
It's further alleged that while Gomez "needs a strong support system around her... there's too much drama in her life right now," making her pals fear "she feels isolated." The outlet's purported tipster asserts, "There's a growing feeling among friends that she should be back in rehab working on herself, before something bad happens." But the "something bad" is actually this article.
Though Gomez has spoken openly over the years about her mental health, no "source" genuinely connected to her would leak personal information about her to the gossip media like this. The publication also deceptively features a photo of the singer-actress looking worn out, but fails to mention that the picture was taken following a workout as Gomez was leaving a pilates class on February 28, more than a month ago. As opposed to actually being visibly downtrodden due to "drama," Gomez was all smiles when she was photographed out and about on Friday.
Additionally, there's no evidence to support the notion that the star is "isolated" and without a "support system." Just a week ago, on March 23, Gomez had a girls night out at a roller-skating facility, and she went skating with pals again days later, on March 27. As for the allegation that Gomez broke up with Bieber because of her mother, Teefey actually told E! Online just days ago that she doesn't even know the status of their relationship. People also reported weeks ago that Gomez and Bieber's break is not because of her mom.
Virtually all of the claims in this "downward spiral" tale are easily contradicted and disproven, much like when the tabloid's sister outlet, RadarOnline, ran a similar story recently alleging Gomez was having a "meltdown." All the available proof actually indicates the opposite. That's not to say that one day, in the near or far-off future, she won't return to in-patient treatment for a tune-up of sorts, just as she did earlier this year. But the dire picture being painted by these publications is currently unsubstantiated.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
