A story about Selena Gomez "splurging" on a birthday present for Justin Bieber was made-up. Far from being an "exclusive" scoop, it's more like an exclusive guess. Gossip Cop can bust it.
With Bieber's birthday just a few days away, HollywoodLife is purporting to have "exclusive details on the splashy gifts" Gomez is allegedly eyeing. The site contends that if Bieber is seen "rocking some expensive new jewelry around his wrist or neck later this week, know that the bling came from his loving girlfriend." Of course, it's entirely possible someone other than Gomez could gift him jewelry for his birthday. It seems, however, that the blog is hoping Bieber will step out with some kind of new bauble that it can claim was given to him by the singer-actress.
Specifically, a so-called "source" asserts Gomez is "considering a $63,000 diamond watch and or a $42,000 diamond cross pendant and necklace." It's unclear where these prices are supposedly from, or what jeweler is involved in procuring such items. But a cross is a rather obvious guess given Bieber's religious devotion and embrace of the Christian symbol. Bieber even has a tiny cross tattoo near his eye, and Bieber also has an array of other religious tattoos, including a giant cross over his chest, Jesus' name in Hebrew, images of Jesus' face, praying hands, and scripture inked on his body. Additionally, as widely reported, Bieber and Gomez spend a lot of time at the Hillsong Church.
Yet it was just one day ago that HollywoodLies, as it's commonly known due to its tendency to manufacture stories, was unsure what Gomez might present Bieber for his birthday. In its previous story, the website speculated, "Perhaps she'll get him some clothes... Perhaps she'll give him a key to her apartment." Now just over 24 hours later, the outlet has purportedly learned what Gomez is "considering," yet is still lacking key details. Oh, and Gomez doesn't live in an "apartment."
But there's another factor to keep in mind: What "source" would really leak Bieber's potential birthday present in advance? Why would someone publicly reveal what Gomez plans to give him before she can actually do so? Gossip Cop also brought up this concern when HollywoodLies alleged in its prior article that Gomez was planning a surprise party for Bieber's birthday. If that were really the case, why would someone spoil the "surprise" by spilling to the gossip media? It just doesn't make sense.
Furthermore, Gossip Cop would be remiss not to point out that it was just over a year ago that the online publication claimed Gomez would be buying then-boyfriend The Weeknd a car for his birthday. We busted the tall tale when it originally came out, and time proved we were right. The Weeknd never received a car from Gomez.
Now here we are with a different beau but the same concept: HollywoodLies is pretending to know the star's plans for her significant other's birthday present. And just like back then, Gossip Cop is told on background that no one actually connected to Gomez is sharing any plans she may or may not have for a birthday gift for her partner.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
