Selena Gomez did NOT say she’s “empowered” by dating The Weeknd, despite a completely false report. Gossip Cop can set the record straight.

In a headline on Monday, HollywoodLife declares, “Selena Gomez ‘Empowered’ By Dating The Weeknd: I’m Enjoying Having A ‘Personal Life.'” The accompanying story similarly says, “How sweet is this? Selena Gomez is finally done hiding her affection for The Weeknd, and she revealed in a March 27 interview that she absolutely loves having him be such a big part of her ‘personal life,’ and that she’s ’empowered’ by him.”

But Gomez absolutely, 100 percent did NOT say any of that. The interview to which HollywoodLies is referring, which was done on-camera for the “Today” show, contains no mention of The Weeknd whatsoever. Still, the webloid writes, “Selena Gomez, 24, and The Weeknd, 26, are going strong, and she couldn’t be more thrilled about that! ‘Right now, I’m actually enjoying finding moments for myself,’ Sel said in an interview on the TODAY show. ‘I like having a little mystery to where I’m at. I think that makes me feel very empowered, very in control of where I’m at.'”

In the misleading article, she’s further quoted as saying, “I’m taking time to have a personal life. I’m doing things that I love that I’m passionate about that I care about… it just makes me happy.” Gomez’s statements, however, had nothing to do with The Weeknd. The site deceptively left out the full quote, in which the context of her remarks were clear.

As seen in the video below, the actress-singer said, “I’m actually enjoying finding moments for myself. Whether I’m in the studio and I’ve been in the studio for a week straight and haven’t really said anything about it, I like having a little mystery to where I’m at. And I think that makes me feel very empowered. It makes me feel in control of where I’m at. I’m also taking time to have a personal life, so I’m enjoying mixing that, because I’ve always been kind of straight work. Now it’s just taking my time.”

Where did Gomez says she’s “empowered” by dating The Weeknd? She didn’t. What does her statement on balancing professional and personal needs have to do with The Weeknd? It doesn’t. Furthermore, Gomez didn’t say anything about her “affection” for him, nor did she reveal “that she absolutely loves having him be such a big part of her ‘personal life,’ and that she’s ’empowered’ by him.”

These are outright lies, and it’s galling that HollywoodLies would twist her words so much when there’s video to show what Gomez actually said. What’s even crazier is this isn’t a singular instance of clickbait trickery. As Gossip Cop noted earlier, Angelina Jolie did NOT reveal plans for her life without Brad Pitt, but the shameful outlet manipulated an interview to make it seem like she had. The bad blog pulled the same stunt here with Gomez and The Weeknd. This is not journalism. It’s fake news.
