Sarah Hyland joked about getting “shot” on Thursday, one day after the congressional shooting. See screengrabs below.

As Gossip Cop reported, a gunman opened fire on Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice, where members of the Republican team had gathered in advance of an upcoming charity game. Rep. Steve Scalise was shot in the hip, and remains hospitalized in critical condition. Four others, including two Capitol police officers, were also wounded.

Although many celebrities reacted on Twitter to the shooting, Hyland was not among them. That, of course, is her prerogative, as no one has to comment on tragedies or anything at all if he or she doesn’t want. But the day after the attack, the “Modern Family” star made a poorly-timed joke about a gunshot wound on her Twitter page.

Hyland first posted a photo of herself in a stained shirt, captioning it, “It’s a spill hot coffee on your storm trooper shirt kinda day.” But then she posted the same picture with a new message. “I realize now ‘I’ve been shot and found out I bleed coffee’ would’ve been a better caption,” she wrote.

Gossip Cop is going to go out on a limb and say no, it would not have been a better caption. Arguably, it’s never appropriate to joke about getting shot, but it seems particularly questionable given the shooting that just rocked the nation and left a congressman seriously injured. Of course, Gossip Cop knows Hyland meant no ill will with her post, and we’ve reached out to a rep for clarification. We assume she wasn’t even thinking of the recent violent act when making what was probably intended to be a light-hearted comment.

Hyland was forced to defend herself on social media just weeks ago amid insensitive criticism about her appearance. After getting accused of being too skinny, the former child star revealed she is battling a medical issue. “Maybe one day I’ll talk about it but for now, I’d like my privacy,” she told followers.
