As Gossip Cop reported, Smith spectacularly screwed up his acceptance speech at last year’s Oscars, claiming he was the first gay man to ever receive an award from the Academy. Taking the stage to collect his well-deserved gong for “Writing’s On The Wall,” Spectre’s theme song, a jubilant Smith went on to misquote Ian McKellen during his faux pas-filled acceptance speech. He said, “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.” While Smith received applause at the ceremony, he was immediately hit with backlash online.

During the interview, Smith opens up about the mistake he made during his Oscars speech, laughing with the talk show host over the controversy. “It all started with a hip flask. Basically, we thought we had no chance of winning at all, I wasn’t happy with my performance, I was just like, let’s get the party started and have some fun. Then we won,” the singer jokes. “I went up and I mucked up my speech and I forgot to say ‘Best Male Actor,’ I said that I was the first gay person to ever win an Oscar. And I obviously know I’m not. My brain and my mouth didn’t work together.”

A clearly embarrassed Smith goes on, “I mucked up. Afterwards, I saw Elton John at the afterparty, and he was like, ‘I won an Oscar.’ I was like, ‘I’m sorry, I was young when you won your Oscar!'” Watch the full video below!
