Ryan Phillippe and Katy Perry are NOT dating, despite a false rumor that became so widespread, helicopters started circling outside the actor's house. Gossip Cop can now reveal exactly how this untrue claim originated from a fabrication factory.

We're talking about the serial fabricators at HollywoodLife, who in March posted an "exclusive" story claiming Phillippe and Perry were seen flirting at Elton John's star-studded birthday party. Gossip Cop was immediately suspicious for a number of reasons. First off, as we have repeatedly pointed out, HollywoodLies' "exclusives" are rarely true. Second, despite widespread media coverage of the bash, no reputable outlet posted anything to back up the site's claims about this "potential new couple."

And when Gossip Cop investigated, we discovered there wasn't any proof to support the flirting assertions. We abstained from busting the story at the time out of respect for a request made by someone close to the situation, who hoped HollywoodLies' inaccurate tale would simply by ignored. But what actually happened is the webloid lit the match, and then last week, OK! poured fuel all over it.

The tabloid published a story claiming Perry was now rebounding from Orlando BBloom with Phillippe. There is little doubt the gossip magazine only ran the article after the seeds were planted by HollywoodLies. It is common practice for one outlet to give life to another's rumor, fanning the flames so much that the public starts to believe the claims are true. And not just the public, but also the paparazzi.

And what's why on Sunday, Phillippe was forced to tweet, "I AM NOT DATING KATY PERRY. BARELY KNOW HER. PLEASE STOP FLYING HELICOPTERS OVER MY HOUSE. SHE IS NOT HERE. thx." The actor understandably went on to decry "low flying pervs hovering periodically" by his private home hoping to get a glimpse of Perry, who most definitely was not there.

The anatomy of this rumor can be directly traced back to HollywoodLies, the first publication to link Phillippe to Perry. Now, whether the bad blog outright made up its original story or perhaps misinterpreted the stars' interaction at that party is still unclear. What's is clear, though, is fake news spiraled to point that Phillippe had to contend with a rather serious privacy invasion at his residence. HollywoodLife and OK! both owe him an apology.
