Director Rupert Sanders called his 2012 affair with Kristen Stewart a “momentary lapse” in a new interview.

As Gossip Cop has reported, the actress and filmmaker began a relationship on the set of Snow White and the Huntsman while she was dating Robert Pattinson and he was married to Liberty Ross, who later filed for divorce. The situation was brought to light when paparazzi photos emerged of the two kissing.

During a recent interview with U.K.’s Metro to promote Ghost in a Shell, Sanders said of the incident, “You never know what’s coming in life. Around every corner there’s something unexpected, and that’s life. You just have to brush yourself off and continue moving forward the best you can.”

The director continued, “Everyone makes mistakes. I am bound to make more mistakes and I wouldn’t expect my life to be exciting if I didn’t.” When asked if he had been worried about the headline-making controversy negatively impacting his career, Sanders responded, “If you took people off the table for a momentary lapse, there would be no one making art.”

As Gossip Cop reported, Stewart and Sanders weren’t brought back for the Snow White spinoff, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, but the actress insisted in an interview with Variety last year that she wasn’t fired. “It wasn’t a situation where I got kicked off a movie because I got in trouble,” she explained. “We had been in talks months after that about making something work, and it never came together.”
