Robert Pattinson was nominated for Best Actor for the 2017 Gotham Awards. The nominees for the annual film ceremony were announced on Thursday.

The Gotham Independent Film Awards were started in 1991 to celebrate the best in independent cinema produced in the Northeastern U.S. In the early 2000s, however, the event expanded to also recognize productions from elsewhere. Each year, it is one of the first shows to take place during awards season, and occasionally is a sign that certain stars or projects may have continued success in the award shows that follow, from the Independent Spirit Awards to the Oscars.

Best Actor was first introduced as a category in 2003, with Matthew McConaughey winning for Dallas Buyers Club. He, of course, went on to win an Academy Award as well. Similarly, last year Casey Affleck won at both ceremonies for Manchester By The Sea. That, of course, is no guarantee that history will again repeat itself. But Pattinson, who earned his nomination for his starring role in Good Time, has been generating high remarks from critics. As Gossip Cop has reported, the actor stars in the crime thriller as a criminal who spends a night trying to get his brother out of jail after a bank robbery gone wrong.

The movie also scored a nomination for Best Feature. Following the announcement, directors Josh and Ben Safdie (pictured above) tweeted, “Not sure how [character] Connie feels about this, but I know Rob is psyched!” Ben co-stars in the film as the aforementioned brother. For this honor, Pattinson is competing against Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), James Franco (The Disaster Artist), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Adam Sandler (The Meyerowitz Stories) and the late Harry Dean Stanton (Lucky).

In the top category, Good Time is up against Call Me By Your Name, The Florida Project, Get Out and I, Tonya. Of the fellow nominees, the Safdie brothers tweeted, “With GREAT company too.” Get Out received the most nominations overall with four nods. The winners will be announced at the awards show on November 27.
