Robert Pattinson and Emma Watson “talk every night”? That was a claim from one of the tabloids exactly one year ago today. At the time, Gossip Cop noted they were not dating, and now 12 months later it’s even more apparent they weren’t in a relationship.

On December 13, 2017, the National Enquirer maintained the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire co-stars moved out of the friend zone to became a couple. To lend credence to its manufactured premise, the magazine quoted an alleged “source” who claimed they were both on the same page about becoming “serious and long-term.” The supposed insider further contended, “They know what they want” and are “going for it.” “They talk every night,” added the outlet’s tipster.

A full 365 days have passed, and it’s clear Gossip Cop was 100 percent right when we debunked the publication’s tale. A Pattinson source told us back then it was false, and a Watson confidante also assured us it was “not true” she was dating the Twilight heartthrob. There’s no question a year later that Pattinson and Watson never embarked on a romance.

Interestingly, a month later, after the two of them presented together at the Golden Globes, the tabloid’s sister publication, Star, alleged Watson rejected Pattinson when he supposedly proposed they have a one-night stand. According to that outlet’s purported source, following Pattinson suggesting the actress stay “overnight” at his place, she “made a face… and ran away.” As Gossip Cop confirmed then, the story was a work of fiction.

It also bears mentioning, not only has Watson previously stated she and Pattinson are “just friends,” but also the Enquirer doesn’t exactly have a stellar record when reporting about her. This past May, for example, Gossip Cop busted a story that wrongly contended Watson was a diva on the set of a movie. In that off-base article, the magazine asserted Watson demanded vegan meals be sent to her trailer.

Among the problems with that piece was the actress is not a vegan, nor even a vegetarian, and she had no films in the works at the time. Nor has the publication been very good with its reports about the Good Time star. Among the falsehoods we’ve corrected were that Pattinson was told by Orlando Bloom to stay away from Katy Perry.

When Gossip Cop looks back at articles from the previous year, it’s not to applaud ourselves for getting it right. It’s to remind readers which outlets they can and cannot rely on for accurate information. The least that magazine could have done was to acknowledge its error. Shockingly, a little more than a week after it first published its story, the tabloid ran another completely fabricated tale about how Pattinson and Watson were “together at last.”
