Does Robert Downey Jr. refuse to appear on Conan O’Brien’s talk show because the late night host poked fun at him? That’s the claim in one of this week’s new tabloids, but Gossip Cop has learned the truth.

An article in the latest issue of the National Enquirer quotes a so-called “source” as saying the actor has repeatedly turned down interviews on O’Brien’s TBS show because he “finds his line of questioning too intrusive and his jokes too prickly.” The outlet’s dubious insider adds, “He didn’t appreciate Conan once saying he was ‘all wrong’ to play Iron Man and poking fun at Robert’s $50 million salary for The Avengers.”

The magazine’s questionable source is referring to a 2015 appearance on “Conan” by Timothy Olyphant, who revealed he auditioned for Tony Stark in the first Iron Man movie and is “still waiting to hear back,” to which O’Brien joked, “I’m guessing you get it. Robert Downey Jr.’s all wrong.” O’Brien also quipped during one of his monologues, “Robert Downey Jr. confirmed that he was paid $50 million to star in The Avengers. Now the Hulk is REALLY angry.” But fans of Downey know he has a wry and self-deprecating sense of humor, so the notion that he was insulted by O’Brien’s innocuous jokes is simply absurd.

Regardless, Gossip Cop checked in with a source close to Downey, who exclusively assures us the tabloid’s story is both “insane” and “completely inaccurate.” Although it’s true the actor has yet to appear on “Conan,” we’re told it’s not for the bogus reason given by the Enquirer, which we previously called out for making up a story about Downey getting caught skinny-dipping in Mexico. This latest article from the untrustworthy publication is similarly false.
