On Monday’s “Today” show, Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer discussed their new HBO movie about the Bernard Madoff scandal, The Wizard of Lies. Watch the full interview below.

De Niro stars as Madoff, who was sentenced to 150 years in prison after scamming investors out of $65 billion, marking the biggest financial fraud in U.S. history. Pfeiffer co-stars as his wife, Ruth. On the morning talk show, the actress expressed her hope that the movie would clear the real-life Ruth of any wrongdoing. “The court of public opinion believes that Ruth and [their two sons] were involved… It couldn’t be further from the truth,” Pfeiffer told “Today” anchor Matt Lauer. “For all of us it was very important that their story be told.”

Pfeiffer revealed that she met Ruth to prepare for the role, noting that she “was guarded, but incredibly gracious.” The actress added, “I was really surprised that she was actually willing to meet me. I just spent time with her. My intent wasn’t to present her with any probing questions. I felt like she had been victimized enough by the media.”

Lauer went on to note De Niro’s uncanny resemblance to Madoff in the film, for which the actor shaved his head. “I did the shaving of the head because when you put on a bald cap, if you look carefully, the forehead is heightened just ever so much, you can see it,” De Niro explained. “I felt you have to [shave the head] to get the real effect.” Watch the full interview below.
