The opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics kicked off in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium on Friday night, and Gossip Cop has all the highlights. Watch the launch of the Olympic summer games below!

Many of the world’s top athletes will be competing in a variety of sporting events, including basketball, gymnastics, track and field, swimming, tennis, golf, volleyball, wrestling, and more. Nearly 5,000 performers and volunteers were involved in the opening ceremony, and swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 gold medals, had the honor of serving as Team USA’s flag bearer.

Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, and Hoda Kotb served as hosts, while Bob Costas opened the telecast on Friday night. Renowned Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles, who made the acclaimed Rio-set movie City of God, directed the opening ceremonies. There were also appearances from Brazilian singers including Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, as well as supermodel Gisele Bundchen. The event was filled pageantry and fireworks, and showcased Brazilian music, dancing and culture. And, of course, there was the lighting of the Olympic torch.
