Ricky Gervais Golden Globes Opening 2016

Ricky Gervais opened the 2016 Golden Globes on Sunday with a hilarious monologue about the last year in entertainment. Watch below!

In the extended bit to kick off the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards, Gervais arrived at the podium where a glass of beer was waiting for him. He promptly told the cheering crowd to “shut up,” calling them “pill-popping, disgusting, sexual deviant scum.” He quipped he’ll be going into hiding afterward, and “not even Sean Penn will find me.” Gervais then said he would “try to be nice,” since “most” of them there have “amazing talent.”

Gervais then mocked NBC, which was airing the broadcast, for scoring zero nominations this year. Still, he insisted, “I’ve changed.” He then said, “Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course. She’s become a role model for trans people everywhere. Showing great bravery in breaking down stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers. But you can’t have everything. Not at the same time.”

A sexual joke about getting “pulled off” followed, leading to talk of “Transparent” star Jeffrey Tambor’s “balls.” He then went back to an old accusation about the Golden Globes winners being the result of film companies buying the honors, which allowed him to talk about some of the nominated movies. He called Spotlight Roman Polanski’s favorite date movie, and joked about Joy star Jennifer Lawrence’s plea for equal wages, despite getting paid “$25 million.”

As some people groaned at the jokes, Gervais fired back, “Shut up — I don’t care!” He also reminded, “If you do win tonight, remember nobody cares about that award as much as you do.” There was then a crack about him “shoving Golden Globes up my ass.” “And they asked me to host four times,” bragged Gervais.

Gervais, of course, infamously hosted the Golden Globes in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Each year, his controversial brand of comedy, with pointed jokes that mocked Hollywood and called out certain stars, sparked a backlash. That led the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to opt for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as joint emcees for the last three years, but the organization decided to give Gervais another shot this time around. The returning host was told he’d largely have free reign to see what he wanted, and it’s clear he’s not holding back.
