Bruce Jenner has an unlikely supporter in Rick Santorum. But that support doesn’t goes as far as the LGBT community may hope. See Santorum’s comments below, and why he’s now clarifying them.

In the wake of Jenner’s confirmation that he is transgender and identifies as a woman, conservative Republican Santorum was asked for his take on the former Olympian’s transition. “If he says he’s a woman, then he’s a woman,” replied the potential presidential candidate. “My responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody. Not to criticize people for who they are. I can criticize, and I do, for what people do, for their behavior. But as far as for who they are, you have to respect everybody, and these are obviously complex issues for businesses, for society, and I think we have to look at it in a way that is compassionate and respectful of everybody.”

Santorum, who previously made a run for the White House in 2012, made the comments during a roundtable discussion by reporters at a party convention in South Carolina, and was responding to a question from Buzzfeed. He was specifically asked if Jenner should be allowed to use women’s restrooms. “So these are tough issues. I haven’t got into the whole issue, and I don’t think the federal government should get into the whole issue of bathrooms,” responded Santorum. He went on, “I think those are things that the business community and local agencies and organizations should deal with.”

The politician has previously voiced his opposition to gay marriage, and even compared it to legalizing pedophilia and bestiality. Given those prior remarks, the former senator’s comments about Jenner were initially taken as a possible shift on his LGBT stance. Santorum took to Facebook on Sunday to say that’s not the case, and offered a clarification.

“Many of you may have read a story published by the website BuzzFeed where I was asked for my thoughts regarding Bruce Jenner. My comment affirmed Jenner as a person, made by God in His likeness as we all are. It was meant to express empathy not a change in public policy. ‪#‎compassion,” he wrote.‬

In his “20/20” interview, Jenner revealed he was on the “conservative side” of the political spectrum, and said he would lobby Republicans “in a heartbeat” about the transgender cause. What do you think of Santorum’s comments about Jenner?
