Is Reese Witherspoon's marriage to husband Jim Toth falling apart? One of this week's celebrity magazines claims the actress may end up getting divorced because of legal issues involving her ex-husband of 12 years ago, Ryan Phillippe. Gossip Cop can correct the report and point on how its premise doesn't even make sense.
According to Star, Witherspoon's marriage to Toth is "hanging by a thread," and it's all a result of drama tied to Phillippe. The tabloid rehashes how Phillippe is being sued by his ex-girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, who he allegedly hit and threw down a staircase. Next, the publication notes how Hewitt's side has sought text messages between Phillippe and Witherspoon to see whether the Cruel Intentions actor may have shared anything with his ex-wife that would establish guilt.
So, what do Phillippe's legal problems have to do with Witherspoon's marriage to Toth? In the real world, they don't. Still, the outlet asserts without any proof whatsoever that it "could tear her marriage to Jim... apart." The magazine further contends the Hollywood talent agent and Witherspoon's marriage has been "plagued by tensions and disagreements," though it doesn't furnish any examples.
"Reese's latest drama with her ex is only placing more strain on the already tarnished relationship," continues the tabloid, still with no direct connection between how Phillippe's cases could split up the Oscar-winner and her husband. The most the outlet's unnamed "tipster" offers is that Witherspoon's exchanges with Phillippe being scrutinized could be "embarrassing," and "it's the last thing she and Jim need to be caught up in." Again with nothing to back up its assertion, the magazine concludes, "Pals fear it's only a matter of time before Reese... is faced with another failed relationship."
As background, in November 2017, Hewitt filed a civil suit against Phillippe, alleging in July of that year he was drunk when she went to the actor's home, and it was then he punched, kicked and threw her down the stairs. Days later he filed a countersuit, in which he denied injuring an "intoxicated" Hewitt, who he claimed "fabricated" the story and was trying to "extort money" from him. Fast forward to October 2018, Phillippe was ordered to hand over his texts with Witherspoon related to the assault case. After not complying and being sanctioned by the court, a month later Phillippe denied he even texted Witherspoon following the incident.
That said, none of Phillippe's legal woes are related to the state of Witherspoon's current marriage. The tabloid simply states vaguely that "pals fear" her ex-husband's case could tear apart what she has with Toth. Gossip Cop, however, will rely on what Witherspoon herself has said about her marriage and husband.
Just a month ago, long after she was dragged into Phillippe's case, a beaming Witherspoon posted a photo on Instagram of her hugging Toth, along with a message that read, "Love my Valentine! #9years of love." And on his birthday in July, Witherspoon gushed on Instagram, "Happy birthday to the best husband, friend, and father in the world !! I love you JT." Those are hardly the words of someone who's marriage is falling apart. Gossip Cop has reached out to Witherspoon's rep for an official comment.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
