Reese Witherspoon is wildly popular these days, with a string of hit shows and movies and a successful production company. That means the tabloids are exploiting her popularity more than ever, and her eight-year marriage to Jim Toth is a popular subject to attack. Here are a few times Gossip Cop has debunked phony stories about problems in the actress's marriage.
In June 2018, NW alleged Witherspoon and Toth went on vacation to save their marriage. In the piece, the tabloid quoted an unnamed source as saying the talent agent "demanded" that his wife go to Mexico with him. According to the untraceable source, Toth "told her months ago not to make any plans for Memorial Day because he was taking her away for some much needed quality time together." The story contended that Witherspoon had been working so much that the relationship was strained and the couple was always apart. There was nothing accurate about the article. As Gossip Cop pointed out at the time, a quick look through the The Morning Show star's Instagram account shows that the couple is together often and frequently have weekend getaways together.
In June 2019, Woman's Day claimed Witherspoon was leaning on her Big Little Lies co-star Nicole Kidman in the midst of marital problems. According to the unnamed "insider" in this story, it was Witherspoon's "hard partying" that was causing problems. According to the so-called insider, "During the filming of the second season of Big Little Lies, Nicole witnessed a lot of tearful fights between Reese and her husband Jim. It seemed like the most natural thing in the world to lend her a shoulder to cry on."
Once again, the premise was completely false. Not only was this just the latest story incorrectly reporting on Witherspoon's marriage, but the paper had a long history of publishing false reports alleging Witherspoon and Kidman were "feuding" on the set of the hit HBO show. Gossip Cop pointed out that the tabloid couldn't seem to keep its stories straight, which is hardly a surprise.
This past July, we called out Woman's Day for a bogus story about Witherspoon and Toth's trip to Paris getting "tense" amid marriage troubles. The month before, the couple had taken a trip to Paris to attend Zoe Kravitz's wedding. That apparently inspired the tabloid to claim the two got into an argument over Witherspoon's "crazy" work schedule during the trip, with Toth "begging her to slow down" and focus on their marriage. The outlet's source added that Witherspoon wasn't responsive to her husband's concerns. According to the tipster, Toth felt that his wife's career came "at the expense of their marriage" and was "fed up" with being such a low priority in her life.
Of course, the entire thing was fiction. Witherspoon posted several photos on social media of her and her husband having a lovely time in France, and paparazzi photos revealed a couple as happy as could be. Regardless, Gossip Cop ran the story by a source close to the couple, who immediately dismissed it. Toth has been nothing but supportive of his wife's career, but that hasn't stopped the tabloids.
In August, Star claimed Witherspoon and Toth's marriage was being torn apart by the actress's work and parenting demands. Citing an anonymous source, the outlet argued that Witherspoon was "so all consumed" with her career and her kids that there was "nothing left" for Toth. The insider said the talent agent wasn't sure "how much longer" he could manage being so low on Witherspoon's priorities, but the actress was "simply so busy she doesn't know how to fix it."
In reality, however, the couple was getting along just fine. Witherspoon posted an adoring birthday message to her husband on social media, and the two seemed happy as could be in public appearances. The tabloid was just regurgitating some of its older stories and claims about the couple, and after two months, nothing has emerged that would lend even the slightest bit of credibility to the claim. It was just the latest in a series of made-up "reports" about the couple's marriage, and it was every bit as fictional as the rest.
Gossip Cop has determined this story is totally false.
